HOW and WHAT is NORMAN doing?

Dear students and families,
WELCOME!
I'm glad that you are here and following my suggestion. You are now reading this post of NORMAN'S account of his activities and thoughts.

MY INTRO: It's FRIDAY and today
I'm using my blog to send you some news!
I would like to call it:
LETTERS from HOME

Yesterday, NORMAN sent me an email in which he attached a kind of journal of what he has been up to during the past weeks.
The advanced group has been communicating to one and other since the end of classes. These classmates have been keeping in touch as they have with me also. This post was authorised by NORMAN. Thank you for sharing!
SO now you can read what he has to say about his activities and his thoughts.

TIMES ARE CHANGING
Thanks to Marilou and Marcelle for sharing their experience during this Covid-19 containment period. You are perfectly right, our lives changed in a matter of days. We had to rearrange it in so many ways.

Personally, no more phone calls from my clients. No more job. My car hasn’t moved from the driveway. We are ordering food on the Web. But the hardest part of it all is not being able to hug our children and grand-children. As we are among the population at risk because of our age, it’s gonna be a long time before we'll be allowed to see them as before without consequences. We’ll have to wait for a vaccine to come.

In the meantime we’re reaching family and friends by Skype and Messenger. Fortunately we have this technology. And now we are using it as we have never done before.

It’s getting hard not to become a couch potato. The series on Netflix are so captivating. I'm embarrassed to admit that we watched the four seasons of Casa de Papel * in one week. This television series became a worldwide phenomenon. We are now looking for another series as good as this one.

I’m also taking the opportunity to do some English homework and watching the unseen seasons of The Walking Dead, in the English version. It’s easier than I thought to under-stand the dialogue. But when the weather allows, we go outside to work in the backyard or take a walk in the neighbor-hood. Gaining weight is a danger that awaits us during this containment period, for we use our spare time that we have a lot of, to cook good meals. It’s great but not without its costs... But what can we do?

I wonder how my English classmates are using their time during the containment period. Are you going crazy or what!?

Norman

* Le titre en français est Maison de papier. Money Heist for the English version

TO FINISH: Thanks again to NORMAN and thanks to you for 'making' the time and reading this interesting post.

VOCABULARY: remember to check the links (Longman’s omline dictionary) for definition and pronunciation.
Remember also to RU-USE these words and personalize your sentences.
Here are the words for today: to share, account of,  journal, thoughts, ...

HAVE a GREAT weekend in the sunshine!!
                          Love to you all,

HAPPY EASTER everyone

Hi there everyone!
How are you doing.

This coming weekend is EASTER SUNDAY!
It will be a simple celebration this year!
No kidding, Suzanne!😕

Here are the two possible scenarios:
we will be staying indoors
 or will be outside
maybe at a safe six-foot distance.
💬
Are you bored or trying to find
something new to do?

Do you think you can find a new hobby,
a new skill, a new way of relaxing.
Do you have a creative 'bug' 😉 in you!!

Here is a suggestion, ...💬
how about drawing in a simple way.
YES! I said DRAWING!
There are many videos on YouTube.
Check them out.
And believe that you can do it!

All you have to do
is just  enter these key words:
drawing - cartoon - animals.

💟Here is an example:

Thinking of you and
thinking seriously about
CHOCOLATE!!!

YESTERDAY and its multiple meanings and uses

This morning (March 28th 2020)
when I woke up
one word was on my mind…
YES! you guessed it!
Y E S T E R D A Y
There are two reasons why the word came to me:
Πthe first one is very personal!
      READ ON!
Yesterday, March 27th 2020, I washed my face,             put on some makeup and did my hair very carefully,       got dressed up, put on some great clothes and …
I went out, YES!, as in outside.                               Out the door and down the steps

Yesterday, Friday, March 27th,   I left my apartment for the first time in two weeks!!   I got into my car and I drove (weird after two weeks…) to a friend’s house.
The sun was out and it was a very warm spring like day
with a wonderful 10 degrees  It was great to be out!

Soooo why did I drive to my friend Louise’s home …
WAIT! Wait! Before you start admonishing me ,
about not respecting the STAY HOME
 and No contact!! measures.
Here is MY EXCUSABLE reason.

  GOTCHA!
Semi-Surprise
Birthday Party!
 YESTERDAY
it was my BIRTHDAY!
For the first time in my life
I celebrated (although very threesome-ly)  OUTSIDE, in the sunshine!   As you can see, I got the whole shebang!
The balloons, the cake and a very yummy gift!!

Louise and Richard, that’s friendship for you!!
Kind, considerate and compassionate friends DO JUST THAT!!!
I got the ‘body language’ hugs and kisses. I got to hear their wishes, live! I got my ‘homemade’ cake and I celebrated with very important company!
BUT and there is a BUT… Didn’t get the HAPPY BIRTHDAY song though, I think that people are all out of the Birthday song because they have to sing it so many times a day while washing their hands ;)
I don’t think that the two ladies that wrote this song in 1893 would have thought it would be used in such a way …
But I digress … Back to the party!!
YESTERDAY … I had a wonderful hour in the sunshine!!
I spent some time with friends (2)
 I felt loved and appreciated!!
Feelings not words!

Birthdays have always been important for me                 (apart from saying that I am alive ;) … Here is why.
Back to yesterday as in when I was a child, a teenager,             a ‘younger person’
My mother, KATHLEEN and I shared the same birthday date! I was born on her birthday! I have always considered myself as a great gift!! (Sorry! My ego just popped up!)
My mom, always made this day very special for me and my Nan-Nan, ETHEL made the cake every single year that I remember (yesterday as in many years ago! As in 74…) One day I can show you some (black and white) pictures that I have kept.
But more importantly …

NOW! For the second reason, the greater meaning of the word YESTERDAY …
I thought of Paul McCartney’s song and its lyrics… And I pulled a few phrases from his lyrics:
YESTERDAY , All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
SUDDENLY, there's a shadow hangin' over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly
Now I need a place to hide away

NOW as in TODAY, how things on this planet have changed. That’s what we call an understatement!  And as the synonym goes, it certainly is not an exaggeration either!
YESTERDAY how things were THEN suddenly, it’s NOW and how we have to cope with this situation and how we are confronted by change.  Even my birthday! A nice and welcomed change, considering!
                 Remember John Lennon’s ‘IMAGINE’.
To finish on a musical note,
No! No! Not ‘Happy birthday to you’
But some very special lyrics to celebrate
what The Beatles gave us as a forever GIFT!

©  YESTERDAY Paul McCartny LIVE
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

MEDITATION and its BENEFITS

       Dear student persons!
Those who learn its techniques often say
they feel less stress, think more clearly,
  practice calm and compassion.

Talking about MEDITATION!!!

Good morning!
I got this video from DIANE R. who is an intermediate student and a social worker.  I appreciated the fact that she thought of me and sent me this  ??? cannot find the word to describe it… VIDEO.
The objective is to counter stress
 In the video’s title
One-Moment Meditation:
"How to Meditate in a Moment"
It is something you can do
 any moment of the day.
It means take a few minutes and breathe!
Take the time to be aware
of what is going on in the moment!

MY MESSAGE to you:
Whether you're feeling sad,
 anxious, or stressed,
How you feel matters!

Have anice day,
SUZANNE

Why I love Google!

                FRIDAY
February 14 * Valentine's Day 2020
Every February 14, people across the world exchange candy, flowers and gifts with their loved ones, all in the name of St. ValentineIt is considered to be the best day to express your love and care for your special one or even express your feelings to the one you love.
Today I would like to share with you my LOVE for GOOGLE. YES! You have read my words correctly! ... my LOVE for GOOGLE.   Let me explain why!
As an ESL TEACHER: GOOGLE is my favourite go-to search engine. And to boot it is FREE!!! (except for your monthly fees of course from your server).  It is amazing how much information (data) is out there!

First of all, it is very helpful to me  as an ESL teacher
when I am preparing documents or sending weekly emails
or Fun Monday cartoons and jokes.
Google helps me share information as in a reading activity.
Google Images also help me  illustrate a difficult word or expression.

While working I can link onto LONGMAN online dictionaruy
(like I have done with the four (4) words above)
to help students understand the words I use
so they can learn new vocabulary.
Secondly, I can also subscribe (give my email address))
to different sites that complement my teaching strategies.
For example:  I am subscribed to PINTEREST
which often is the link that appears from Google IMAGES
when looking for grids – charts – images – pictures - clip art and gifs.
Third,  I regularly use the YOUTUBE link, as well. It is useful for listening activities and also to explain English grammar.
Sometimes I use it as an assistant teacher! ;)

To conclude I would like to say to you, dear students,
who are reading this today, I really want to encourage you to use
this treasure trove of images and information.

GOOGLE will help you just as much as I when you are working
with the internet. It will help with your English learning whether
it be during the session or when you are working 'solo' at home.

Have a great Valentine's Day with all your LOVED ONES!!!

SUZANNE

JUST A NOTE to FINISH :   next time you are in class, take the time to ask me
After reading I would really like you to LEAVE A COMMENT
